Portrait of Jaco... the Early Years Guestbook
thank's for all the memories bob. as a close friend, i somehow found myself crying at times, and laughing at the same time. great job! it moved me beyond belief. words can not describe it, we were there, and always will. hearing ''tracy'', and all the old cuts reminded me of our early years, and the great cuts yet to come. Bob, there is nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. This is an historical masterpiece. I am overwhelmed with emotion. I have yet to make it through. What wonderful memories it has brought back. I would definitely ride that roller coaster again! (all the ups and downs!) I also want to give a shout out to a couple of people I see have written you that I haven't seen in many, many years but have nothing but fond memories of. Hello to Scott Kirkpatrick (can you still do spitteroos?) Also, hello to Roger Bernsen, who I always adored. Please say hello to your family, especially Martha. I hope she is well. She was always an inspiration to me.

My heartfelt thanks to you Bob for this piece that will be handed down in our family for generations. I hope to play it for my great-grandchildren someday. And very special thanks to all of you out there who haven't forgotten Jaco - not just the great musician, but the unique, joyful, silly little boy that I fell in love with. love, tracy

Bob: This compilation was one of the most moving things I have ever heard. I made it all the way until the 9th cut before I broke down and cried. His solo with Tommy Strand says it all. At 20 years old, his gift was shining like a beacon. His choice of notes reminded me of a unique tonal mode and rhythmic approach that I will always associate with him. It lifts me up and makes me feel happy. This momentary departure from the day to day routines we create in life is what defines music as an art form. I am thankful that Jaco helped me "get it." God bless you for this fabulous tribute.

Bob - the first time you played POJ for me, I was blown away. I'm still blown away every time I listen to it. Words can't describe it.

I can never thank you enough for letting me be involved with this release.

Bob Bobbing authenticates himself, and his work "Portrait of Jaco," by being one of those students who got it. By not limiting himself to the conventions of classical biographies, Bob's use of reel-time record keeping, and poignant real-life photos, culminates with the in depth Eye, and Ear witness interviews and takes us all closer to understanding the fundamentals of how, why, where and what inspired Jaco to do what he did. Bobbing gets us so close we can almost smell the Mangos.

After all, is that not what at least in part we all hope happens to us, that if we get close enough, maybe we can taste "it," that maybe some of "it" might rub off on us too.
Digging deep, going where "no one has gone before" is a true hallmark of those who really have been inspired by the maestro. Not being limited to, or being satisfied with the Status Quo and doing something about it is a true test for any Pastorian Student.

There should be a Warning, "Contents will take you to places you have never been before, or possibly remind you of a time that was really Cool" with the disclaimer - You are going to love it!

Thanks Student Bobbing, you passed the test! You now can move to the next Level.
Sincerely Jr. Student Roger Bernsen

Nice work Bob!
Everytime I saw Jaco perform live back in the 70's and early 80's, I felt an incredible force of energy from his presence, whether it was with Weather Report, Joni or solo. "Portrait of Jaco" brought that feeling back to me as I listened from beginning to end... unable to hit the stop button, and grinning from ear to ear. This is the first recording that I've heard since 'Shadows & Light' that captures Jaco's essence, and also serves as a history lesson for all who are new to Jaco - a lesson that helps to explain how it came to be that one man could change the course of one instrument.

Great job Bob!
"Portrait of Jaco" is a unique look into Jaco's musical history, and is a pastiche and superb melding of audio, visual (CD Booklet), and insightful audio commentary from his past employers, influences and contemporaries. I cannot think of another more heartfelt project that even compares! Ken Burns take note!
Thanks for the memories.
Best,
