Portrait of Jaco... the Early Years Guestbook
I knew Jaco. We met at Ricards Junior High. I played guitar at his first gig. He was a drummer then. We practiced in my garage on n.e. 57th court. Our second gig was at the Yankee Clipper. Jaco was refused a drumming gig with a band of a schoolmate (Kim Brewer). My guitar teacher told Jaco he should take up bass guitar, since there were a lot of great guitar players, ther were'nt many great bass players. I moved to Philly in 1968. Jaco's car broke down on the way there. I picked him up at the Greyhound station. He came equipped to play with his sunn bass amp, stand-up bass, precision bass and an old sax. Jaco played along with my 8 track to Blood Sweat and Tears, " I can't quit her." I took Jaco to his aunt and uncles in PA. He went down to Jersey looking for his father. He inspired me tremendously and we stayed in touch until I entered the service in 1974. I miss him, he was my closest childhood friend.

Bob-

I've said it before and Ill say it again-you've done Jaco's story justice the way noone else could have-and just as he deserved it. The music world owes you thanks forever.

The sound lives on with your help and insight into the genius and soul of the artist. Talk to you soon.

Im proud to have played in the same sandbox and with the same toys as the master-and still can feel it.

I first heard Jaco on "Black Market" and I bought the solo album at that time when it came out. I thought it was an acoustic bass just like Zawinul because I had never heard that warm and expressive tone on an electric. I had a Hofner bass which I soon traded in for Fender. Well the years went by and I graduated and got into Music Education but I was still gigging as much as I could. I really got into acoustic bass at this time but I would always listen to Jaco for inspiration. In November of 1985 I was in New York to visit a girlfriend of my and we ended up breaking up. I was really down. I wanted to hear some music so I picked up the Village Voice and there it was...Jaco Pastorius and Word of Mouth at Seventh Avenue South. I got to the club really early (about 5pm) and there he was. I introduced myself and he was such a great person to me when I was feeling so down. He was cheering me up and even got me into the show for free. I sat on the front row and couldn't believe that I was actually hearing him live. Later on we traded berets and I came back to the classroom with a new perspective and purpose in music. I was going thru the website not to long ago and I saw a name which was very familiar to me. Corey Brown was a student at the high school where I taught in the mid 80's. We were really into Jaco and I had even sold him one of my Fender Basses. So I contacted Corey to see if it was him and I was surprised to find out it was! Bob and Corey have designed such a magnificent tribute to a musician I consider my mentor and I always think of him when I pick up my bass. Thanks Bob and Corey for filling in the historical perspective of Jaco in such a work of art that is "Portrait of Jaco"

Well Bob,

Tell me how are you going to top POJ?? Just the last track alone "Las Olas Farewell" is a fabulous edition for any Jacophile's collection. If this was an anthology or whatever, lets call it Volume I. I'm itching for POJ Volume II.

Jaco says "I know where I stole every note!" Just make sure we know about it. Unwind those years quickly, you know we cannot get enough of this priceless material. I keep hearing that CLANG-CLANG-CLANGING as the train passes his street in Oakland Park..... bring that train back Bob, I want to hear it again, with Jaco.

Thank you! Finally a LEGITIMATE posthumous release celebrating the great master. I had the fortune of being around Jaco when he was at his best. I was also around when he was at his lowest, and some of the various "walkman tapes" and so-called "lost sessions" that have been released do a great disservice to his incredible legacy. POJ puts them all to shame. Hearing the seeds of so many of my favorite Jaco moments is a heart stopping experience. Listening to his developement is awe inspiring, and motivates me to pick up my bass every day and still dream.

I ran into Bob, John and Mary at NAMM this year (2004) and was given a copy. Rarely do I have time to listen to anything handed to me in public, but after hearing about this for so long I couldn't wait to hear it. And I know I don't have to tell anyone who took the time to find this site, that it was well worth the wait. Congratulations to Bob Bobbing and the Family, for now in passing as in life Jaco is still REPRESENTING!!!!

Simply an amazing acomplishment! It's all there, the music, the magic, and the sad tragedy that he's gone. This CD is worth the price just to hear Zawinul's comments. Sincere, direct, and profound in a way that comes across the CD right to your heart.
A wonderful compilation.

Thanks so much!
