Portrait of Jaco... the Early Years Guestbook
I was fortunate to see jaco in his prime. I went to see Weather Report in the fall of 1977 in Greensboro, NC, the Heavy Weather tour. They opened up with Birdland, I just stood there with my mouth open in awe watchin Jaco groove through the whole show! Bob Bobbings thanks whole heartedly for Portrait of Jaco. Mary let those bad Jaco stories go out the other ear, those people are just jealous and negative people to start with. I,ve been listening to your dad about everyday since 76! love to the pastorius family!

The beauty of Jaco's music is only equal to the love he put in his work.

His life was about giving and he gave a lot. Don't you all think it's about time for this genius to be recognized ? Let's say the Grammy's perhaps? And not during the afternoon ceremonies if you catch my drift?

Peace

I had never met Jaco, But I heard his music. I couldn't quite get it, it was TOO intense. I later moved to Miami and met people who knew Jaco and I learned of his legend. I quickly started to purchase anything he had played on. I am simply amazed at his genius. THANK YOU Bob Bobbing for putting together this wonderful collection of what will have to be the living testament of the worlds greatest bass player. Jaco has set the standard that all others must play by. I was saddened as I sat on his gravesite on a recent trip to Florida, but hearing this music has made me feel that he is not really gone, his music lives on. And I hope I get the chance to educate many other people about JACO the BADASS!

I opted for someone to sub for me in a band so i could see Weather Report Live in Phoenix around the mid 70's...Never dreamed that jaco would walk past me at the concert and I would have the opportunity to chat for a sec...I said to jaco, how do you get that sound? He rubbed his fingers together and said its in these!!, lots of great bass players out there but few play with finesse he replied...So there you go!!! its NOT how many notes you can whizbang off your fingers, its how many can you play with finesse.. ..I have yet to hear anyone play with such heart and soul and with such finesse ...I'm thankful God gave him to us but I miss him being here on this dirt ball for musical inspiration..Long live his family and his music ...(Peace)

well, a lot has been said about Jaco that I don't have to repeat except that his sense of time, placement, and feel is incomparable to any other bass player on the scene or past. WoW Jaco you were the greatest and always will be in my eyes.

Well what can I say... From the cosmos we all came and of light our soul is made.. so Jaco a Star on earth. I had the privilage of seeing him play at The El Mocambo in Toronto Canada as well as shaking his hand...a moment never to forget. He has been and continues to be and inspiration to my playing and learning. Thank you and let the light shine on.

nice to hear some of the old "guard" give some input. looking forward to hearing the "real stuff," which you and i know is yet to come. to truly understand the "genius" of Jaco, one must understand his roots, the music will always be there. to some of his "famous students," do not forget who got you there. this is a great passage of my dear friend, a legend in his own time, and truly, the funkiest player you all will never know.
thanks bob, it is only me.

I am at this site via my recent purchase of JP Big Band Word of Mouth Revisited. Clearly my next purchase must be Portrait of Jaco.

I have been a Jaco fan for close to thirty years. I know that ranks me as a novice compared to so many fortunate people who knew him personally.

I was only able to see him perform live twice, with Weather Report.

Jaco's playing still stuns me. There are boatloads of gifted musicians, but very few have such a major impact on music.

Thank you Jaco...and thank you BB for creating this work. I will do my part to continue to spread the word.

Bob,

I just got the Early Years box-set and I am shocked and moved and amazed. I've been a Jaco fan for as far as I can remember and this compilation of his early works is not just exceptional among the ever released Jaco works, but I have never even seen a compilation so esthetical, professional and most of all in a musical sense brilliantly put together. When listening to all of this really original early music of Jaco and the commentaries and reading that wonderful booklet I was really moved - by the music and the exceptional way this memoir was put together. It really gave insights to the development of one of the greatest artist of the 20th century. Jaco would be proud. Congratulations and thank you (and Jaco) for these moments.

Bob,

Congratulations on capturing and exemplifying the unique creativity of an artist whose legacy will now become a permanent cornerstone in musical history as a direct result of your masterful tribute!

Your depiction of the “early years” brought back memories of the pleasure of knowing and working with Jaco. The later years, when I had lost contact, now have more meaning. It took me days to listen and digest the awesome variety of tracks. The experience triggered emotions I have not felt since my decision to stop performing.

I know of your years of tireless dedication to this project, and let me assure you that the final culmination is a most fitting reflection of that dedication and will be appreciated by all of us who knew Jaco as well as those who will now have the opportunity to know him.

Thank you Bob Bobbings,
Sincerely;
